At Bulk Minerals, we pride ourselves on offering a diverse range of top-quality products to meet the varied needs of our clients.

With their exceptional characteristics, our premium pumice and ash products are predominantly found throughout the construction industry, providing lightweight yet durable solutions. Whilst they are both particularly found in varying blocks, cement and concrete, pumice is also utilised throughout the agricultural and landscaping sectors, and PFA is highly applied in fill and grouting operations. Additionally, our high-grade aggregates can be sourced and delivered on demand to meet all our customer needs.

PFA & FBA

Sourced from the UK’s last remaining coal-fired power plant, Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station, Bulk Minerals Ltd distributes over 170,000 tons of power station ash products annually.

Fine Pulverized Fuel Ash (PFA), and the courser more granular Furnace Bottom Ash (FBA) are both products resulting from the combustion process used to produce electricity at coal-fired power stations.

APPLICATIONS

PFA and FBA are used in a range of building materials, including:

  • Block making
  • Cement
  • Filler – Grouting and Mineworks
  • Highway Construction

ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS

  • PFA often replaces virgin aggregates
  • PFA consist of similar elements to soil
  • PFA is non-harmful, stable and durable
  • PFA has limited capacity for leaching
  • PFA is a secondary by-product that has cementitious properties and can be used as a cement substitute
  • PFA in concrete results in a reduction in emissions
  • PFA is practical and safe, and reduces the requirements for other process-intensive aggregates

With Bulk Minerals’ high quality ash supply only 6 miles from our operational base, our exclusive partnership with Ratcliffe began in 2013, and will continue after its decommission in September 2024 with the extensive stock remaining. However, our relationship with Ratcliffe stretches back to the 1970’s, where members of the Fred Sherwood Group began working with the station shortly after it was commissioned, and still are to this day.

With a central base, Bulk Minerals is situated in the Midlands on the Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire border, enabling the company’s extensive UK-wide supply. Our exclusive partnership with Ratcliffe power station, enables undivided access to the ash products produced, and therefore, we can ensure a reliable supply chain for our customers.

Due to this nationwide network Bulk Minerals possesses, it allows us to expertly direct quality products to manufacturing and major infrastructure projects throughout the construction industry. Deliveries of our materials are completed by our sister haulage companies, Bulk Freight (Midlands) Ltd and Fred Sherwood & Sons (Transport) Ltd, via both articulated and rigid vehicles.
